On which day Elon Muk suspended their accounts
On Thursday all reporters received a notification on Twitter that is their accounts suspended. Elon Musk suspended many journalists, reporters, and news channels’ Twitter accounts.
Why Elon Musk suspended their accounts
Reuters couldn’t immediately ascertain why those Twitter accounts were suspended. All the suspended reporters have in recent months written about Twitter’s owner, Elon Musk, & changes at the platform since he bought it.
Elon Musk tweeted why he banned all reporters’ Twitter accounts: “Same doxing rules apply to “journalists” as to everyone else,” a reference to Twitter rules suspending sharing of personal information, called doxing.
He added: “Criticizing me all day long is fine, but doxxing my real-time location & endangering my family is not.” That’s why he suspended all reporters’ accounts.
Twitter didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
On Thursday, Twitter suspended an account tracking Musk’s private jet in real-time. A month after Elon Musk said his commitment to free speech extended to not suspending the account.
Name of Suspended accounts
The Twitter accounts of Times reporter Ryan Mac (@rmac18). Post reporter Drew Harwell (@drewharwell), CNN reporter Donie O’Sullivan (@donie), & Mashable reporter Matt Binder @MattBinder were suspended. The account of independent journalist Aaron Rupar (@atrupar), who covers U.S. policy &politics, her Twitter account was also suspended.
A spokesperson for The New York Times said: “Tonight’s suspension of the Twitter accounts of several prominent reporters, including The New York Times’s Ryan Mac, is questionable & unfortunate. Neither The Times nor Ryan has received any explanation about why this occurred. We hope that all of the reporters’ accounts are reinstated & that Twitter delivers a satisfying explanation for this action.”
Twitter banned Mastodon company
The other reporters couldn’t immediately be reached.
The official account of the social media company Mastodon (@joinmastodon). Which has emerged as an alternative to Twitter since Elon Musk bought the company for $44 billion in October, was also suspended. Mastodon couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Twitter is now leaning heavily on automation to moderate content, doing away with certain manual reviews & favoring restrictions on distribution rather than removing certain speech outright, it’s the new head of trust & safety Ella Irwin told Reuters this month.
